Grammy, are ghosts real?

Updated: Jun 16

Have you ever lived with a ghost? I have.

I’m currently working on my fourth children’s book based on a conversation I had with my eldest granddaughter when she was three.

But first some background information on ghosts.

It’s not uncommon that the spirit of an animal or person who has died visits you or maybe has taken up permanent residence in your home. It’s been my experience that spirits get attached to a place or to a person, but they can also be attached to an object. An example in my life is with my pets that have crossed over. They are attached to me and come to visit from time to time even though some have never lived where I live now.

Years ago my husband and I lived in an old historical home as the caretakers. A ghost also lived in the house. After doing some research recently, I discovered that a previous owner’s five year old daughter died at the time the family was living in the house. Her name was Mary, a very common girl’s name for the mid 1800’s.

Note: I mentioned the ghost in previous blog post, “I talk to Dead People”, which you may want to check out.

In the blog post I wrote: At night while lying in bed, I often heard singing. I call it singing because I could feel that’s what she was doing, my ears and brain heard it as an odd kind of humming. She was most active at this time of day and the humming sound would bounce around the room like a rubber ball.

While I heard Mary often, one day I did see her as she played peek-a-boo with me. This was the only time I actually saw her. I was halfway up the large main staircase when I looked up. She had somehow gotten my attention to look up. Mary was peeking over the large old trunk that was at the top of the stairs against the banister. I could see her smiling face as she popped up and down playing that age-old game of peek-a-boo. I went along with the game, which only lasted about 30 seconds. Making herself visible was hard work. But I’m glad I got to finally see her. Her image is forever ingrained in my mind. Plus, the dress she was wearing gave me a clue as to the time period.

This dress looks a lot like what I saw.

This photo I found online of a child from the mid 1800’s is very close to what I saw Mary wearing. The only difference is her dress had a collar. The lack of a color photo actually shows pretty much how I saw her. I see ghosts in shades of gray from dark gray to black. I’ll never forget her beautiful smiling face full of laughter. Maybe I was the only one in over a 100 years that could see her as we made eye contact for about 1 minute.

Paranormal activity in a house can happen in a few different ways. Examples are: moving objects, strange noises, cold spots or an apparition sighting. My experience has been sightings and hearing. But the previous caretakers saw furniture move. They weren’t freaked out and matter-of-factly shared their observations with us shortly before we moved in. My mom felt her presence a few times in the attic bedroom when she came to visit.

We all have different intuitive strengths, even if you don’t know what they are. For me it’s feeling (an inner knowing), hearing and seeing. Either one of these can be stronger than the other at anytime.

Intuitive experiences can not be explained by the laws of science or other earthly ways. But we all have the ability, it just may be stronger for some. Through practice, you can strengthen your abilities and discover which Clair is your strongest.

To start with, think about the different “Clairs” I’ve listed below and what seems to be the strongest in you. The following are definitions for the most common Clair Senses.

Clairsentience is clear feeling and is the most common of the clairs. This is when we feel the information often expressed as a “gut feeling”. It can be an individual feeling, or the physical and emotional pain of a place where something happened, good or bad.

Claircognizance is clear knowing. This is when someone has information or knowledge of something that he or she does not actually know. Thoughts come out of nowhere and pop into their minds. They get information about something that might happen in the future or a situation might have a message, right or wrong.

Clairvoyance is clear seeing. This is when someone sees through their minds eye, aka the third eye, the space between your eyebrows. You may see flashes, images, something like a movie or television program or even as a photograph in their mind of what is happening in the past, present or future.

Clairaudience is clear hearing. Someone has the ability to hear things psychically without the use of their physical ears. It’s basically telepathic information coming into someone’s mind. Sometimes, one will hear a regular voice as if someone is speaking, or in my example, singing to them. I feel this is my strongest clair. I’ve had to tell whom ever so many times to go away and leave me alone. But other times, I will converse with them.

Clairalience is clear smelling. Someone can smell odors that are not present. For example, this would be to smell some perfume or a cigar, but neither of these things are present at that moment.

The top five Clairs.

Here are some ways to strengthen your clairs and maybe connect with a loved one (person or animal) that has passed away.

1. Meditate regularly, or at the very least, a focused practice in a quiet place. Learn how to get still and quiet enough to hear/feel/see/know.

2. Try asking a question then notice what comes up in response and just go with it; release all judgement.

3. Pay attention to your dreams and what the messages might be.

4. This is a fun exercise that helps build clairvoyance. Try and guess an image, such as with playing cards. Shuffle the deck, find your stillness, hold the card face down and be on the lookout for images that just pop into your mind out of the blue. At first it might seem futile, but the more you practice, the stronger your ability to use this sense will get.

5. Whenever you get a strong gut feeling about something, take note and write it down. Notice what you feel and what was going on at that time. Soon you’ll begin to notice how often messages comes to you. Receiving them will get easier over time. But you've got to right them down or you'll forget.

6. The next time you are trying to figure something out and your logical brain is stumped, silently ask your intuition to give you the answer through claircognizance, inner knowing. Don't poo, poo what comes up. You might not get it at first, but will make sense later.

Most of all, have fun with your senses. Getting too serious will only make it harder for you to grow. So relax and have fun with it because you’ve got nothing to lose and so much to gain.
