How Open is Your Heart?

Learn about some physical and mental signs of blocked energy in your heart and how to clear it.

I’m guessing that you’ve probably heard about chakras, the seven main wheels of energy in the body that start at the crown of your head, and travel down the body to the base of your spine.

Note: If it seems odd to you that I'm writing about this topic given my offerings, but it really does fit. As a transformational coach, your body, mind and heart are key to creating a life you love.

So what better place to address those longings than the heart?

(plus I'm a life long yogi & taught yoga for 20yrs.)

:-) On with the topic...

When the energy is spinning properly, each chakra allows Qi (pronounced Chee) energy to flow through the body. If these energy wheels become sticky or blocked by stress, anxiety, emotional upheaval, even from past life issues this time around, your well-being can suffer.

The fourth chakra, called Anahata in Sanskrit, is located at the heart. This is also where, it’s believed, that your soul lives. If it becomes blocked or clogged, you may find it hard to develop and/or keep healthy relationships.

So, what are the signs of a blocked or clogged heart chakra? How can you unblock it?

This fourth primary chakra, called Anahata, is our body’s center of love for oneself and others, compassion, empathy and forgiveness. Anahata means: unhurt, unstuck and unbeaten.

It’s associated with unconditional love, compassion, and joy. It is also the source of our deep truths. The heart chakra, being in the middle of the seven main chakras, is a bridge between the lower and upper ones and the place of integration.

Anahata is associated with the element of air. Air disperses and integrates spiritual understanding of love, compassion and connection to everything you encounter. Air, like love, is within and all around us. We can manifest this element by keeping our heart center open and our love free-flowing. But, not always an easy thing to do.

When the heart chakra is in healthy alignment and spinning freely, you’ll feel surrounded by love, compassion, and joy and connected to the world around you. You’ll feel open to experiences in life, and will feel like your challenges, especially in relationships, flow through you and are resolved with ease.

An open heart chakra allows us to see all of the beauty and love around us, and truly connect to ourselves, our loved ones, and the natural world. This chakra also helps us love and accept ourselves, mind and body, as we are. But if the heart chakra becomes blocked or partly blocked, you’ll notice the opposite; physically, emotionally and mentally.

Symptoms of blocked energy can manifest as physical ailments as well. The health of the heart chakra affects the heart, lungs, chest, arms, and hands. When misaligned, poor circulation, high or low blood pressure, and other heart and lung conditions can result. One’s health can also include infections of the lungs, bronchitis, and circulatory problems.

Blocked/stagnant energy can also have an effect our mental state. Mentally, an imbalanced heart chakra can result in issues, such as co-dependency, manipulative behaviors, feeling unworthy and the inability to trust yourself or others.

Other signs of a blocked heart chakra could be:

Tendency to isolate yourself excessively

Feeling lonely

Holding grudges against people you love

Frequently feeling jealous

Overly defensive

A fear of intimacy (try this)

Putting yourself in the role of the rescuer or victim

Difficulty trusting others

Ways to bring balance to the heart chakra:

Though the heart chakra can become blocked, it can also be brought back to balance through some of these simple tips.

*Feel gratitude. Keep a gratitude journal, write down three things a day that you feel grateful for. Be sure to include the little things.

*Practice backbends of any sort. If you know yoga poses, try these: Cobra Pose, Upward-Facing Dog Pose and Bridge Pose, and Fish Pose. When you’re warmed up, perhaps you can take yourself into Wild Thing pose, Bow Pose and/or Camel Pose.

*Take part in my loving kindness meditation. It’s on my website. (link)

*Drink heart opening beverages like rose tea and cacao.

*Practice heart-opening affirmations. (example list below)

*Past life meditation can help to release past issues. (With Denise Linn)

*Hold a baby (animal or human) Happy loving tears and smiles can do wonders to open the heart chakra.

*Carry or wear jade, rose quartz, malachite, and emerald. You can use rose essential oil, ylang, ylang, or geranium in a diffuser. Consume more green foods (heart chakra’s color) such as kiwi, spinach, avocado, broccoli, and peas, to name a few.

A healthy and balanced chakra energy is so important for our mental, physical and spiritual wellbeing.

Our heart center relies on an open chakra to experience free-flowing love, compassion, and empathy. When you feel stuck in these areas, you can balance this energy center with the tools above to open your heart to the love and beauty always surrounding us.
